In my newest blog/vlog, I talk about Three Easy Steps to Becoming a Published Author. And the title is so misleading. There is nothing easy about becoming an author. There are, however, steps you can take to ensure you are at least on the right path!
I am going to ignore all of the obvious roadblocks, and speed bumps, and pitfalls associated with the journey of becoming a published author, and instead focus on Three Easy Steps you can be taking to get your writing career off the ground.
First of Three Easy Steps to Becoming a Published Author
Read. I cannot say it enough. Read. Read. Read! It is so important to read books in the genres you wish to write in. When I am mapping out a fantasy novel, I immerse myself in fantasy novels. When I want to write a mystery, I read suspense and crime novels. When I finish writing a book, I read an array of books. When I need a break from writing, I read books. When I am reading a book, I don’t just read one at a time. I keep one at work, and one at home (usually different genres, just to keep everything straight).
So, if I had to suggest how to get started as a writer I think you’ll know my response. Read.

Write. You want to be a writer? Don’t talk about it. Do it. Not sure how to get started? Keep a journal, a diary. Start a blog. Write Book Reviews for all of the Books you are now reading (See First of Three Easy Steps to Becoming an Author above if you have no idea what I am talking about).
Writing is a lot like brushing your teeth, or going to the gym. It requires Discipline, Dedication, and Drive. Set a schedule. Stick to it. If you want to write mornings before work, then make it a routine, and try not to deviate. You wouldn’t run out the door in the morning without brushing your teeth, even if you only have time for a fast one-two brushing, right? (I don’t know you. So maybe you would. Let’s all assume that you would not)!
Just like working out regularly. The more you write, the better you will start to feel about your writing. You will see improvements, and the your trouble spots will become more apparent. The more writing you do, the more results you will see, the more potential for sales you might find!

This third step is often the most difficult. (And this step assumes that many, many behind the scenes steps have already been taking, such as: 1) You have finished a manuscript, and 2) You have edited said manuscript). Submit your work.
You can’t get published (unless you self-publish, which is entirely different) unless you submit your work. It takes great courage to wrap up your baby and send it off to some stranger to critique and judge and either accept, or reject . . . (Whoa! I got cold sweats just writing that last sentence)! It may never get easy –submitting– but it will always be essential to getting published.
